A chat with Designer Vanissa of Neous

We sit down with Vanissa Antonious Founder & Designer of Neous to discuss the details on the cult-brand and how it got to where it is now.

How did Neous start and why?

My love for accessories started early, and as a stylist, I saw a clear need for distinctive, practical accessories that matched my personal style and that of my friends. This fueled my desire to create something unique for confident women who know what they like. NEOUS was born as a brand which crafted refined, versatile and practical designs that celebrate modern women's individuality.

How has your heritage influenced your personal style as well as Neous designs?

Growing up, my parents instilled in me a minimal outlook, which significantly influenced my style and design approach. As I grew older, I noticed and embraced my unique personal style, refining it along the way. Working in the fashion industry also exposed me to a multitude of products, allowing me to continue to identify what truly stands the test of time and remains distinctive.

Do you have a starting point of where you seek inspiration around the ideation and design for a new collection?

Design inspiration can strike from the most unexpected places. I draw from a wide range of sources, including architecture, art, and nature. The clean lines and geometric forms found in architecture often inspire our designs. I’m obsessed with texture and contrast; this sets our foundations along with versatility and practicality.

After a successful career in the journalism and publishing industry, how does it feel to be on the other side, as a brand owner and designer?

Both paths share a very common thread which is storytelling and connection through imagery. The designer side however is infused with commerce which brings a different level of consideration, it's almost a more direct conversation with the viewer/ consumer, for me it has become much more personal.

How do you envisage the new collection to be worn, and who is wearing it?

For our AW23 collection, titled 'Lost in Translation,' we pay homage to the flux and flow of everyday life. I envision this collection being worn by the NEOUS customer who knows who they are and what they like. They appreciate both the practicality and distinctive style that our designs offer.

Which items in the collection have truly stood the test of time so far?

Styles like our heirloom Phoenix handbags and our timeless Irena and Jumel have truly become signature pieces. These items have earned their status and are inherently distinctive.

Can you give us some insight as to what’s next for Neous?

Getting to know you all a whole lot more, the most brilliant thing about launching a brand is the personal messages we receive and learning so much more about who our customer is and what they are loving and why.

Growing up, my parents instilled in me a minimal outlook, which significantly influenced my style and design approach.
