Signature pieces are an essential foundation of your wardrobe. We sit down with our Brand Director Vanessa to discuss the foundations of building your capsule wardrobe. 

What are the starting points when building your essentials wardrobe?

1. Look for quality pieces that are timeless yet versatile, allowing them to be worn in different ways and styled with other core garments as well as seasonal trend styles.

2. Consider what staples you’ll get multiple use from that can be worn across various occasions. 

3. Consider a classic black blazer, tailored pant, basic tee or tank and for a dressier option, a classic dress in a cut that can be styled with both heels and sneakers. Oh and of course, a quality pair of denim jeans. 

What do you look for to ensure versatility & longevity?

1. Invest in quality fabrications; a well-made garment will ensure it has longevity for multiple wears. 

2. Seek a neutral or monochromatic colour palette — This will take you through season on season. It can also easily be styled with seasonal colours and prints. 

3. It's important to choose pieces that fit well and make you feel good. It’s never a good idea to invest in pieces that you don’t feel comfortable in, this will act as a barrier when styling them; a core piece is not designed to sit in your wardrobe with no life!

Quality over quantity? 

I always opt for quality over quantity. I'd prefer fewer garments, but for them to be key garments that I love.

What brands do this well?

ESSE do this exceptionally well; they design their pieces to build back to previous collections. It’s a more mindful approach to style and consumption, as they slowly curate a collection of high-quality and timeless pieces. RÓHE is another great brand that focuses on the reinvention of wardrobe classics. Talk us through one core piece and how you could style it multiple ways?

The tailored pant is a staple in anyone’s closet. As a mother of 2 I prefer a higher waisted option which can be worn for every day. I can dress them up with heels for the office but also works for a more casual look paired with sneakers or sandals with an oversized blazer. A classic tailored pant can also be styled for an event achieving a dressier look. Brands that offer a great tailored pant are RÓHE, Nili Lotan and The Attico.
