High-quality cashmere is a luxurious, long-lasting material that, with the right care, can be enjoyed for many years. By following simple steps for washing, drying, storing, and maintaining your cashmere, you can keep it looking and feeling its best.
Washing
Cashmere doesn’t need to be washed after every wear, but regular cleaning helps prevent moths. For plain or fine-knit cashmere, handwashing with a gentle cashmere detergent is recommended. If using a washing machine, select a delicate, wool, or hand-wash cycle with a maximum temperature of 30°C and no spin. Placing cashmere in a laundry bag offers extra protection. For stains or a deeper clean, professional dry cleaning is a good option. Brushed, boucle, or silk-blend cashmere should always be dry-cleaned.
Drying
Lay cashmere flat on a towel, roll it up gently to absorb excess water, then reshape and air dry flat. Avoid hanging, as this can cause stretching. Brushed and boucle cashmere should be professionally cleaned and dried.
Ironing & Steaming
To remove wrinkles, turn the garment inside out and lay it flat. Use an iron on the lowest heat setting with a damp cloth between the iron and the fabric to prevent direct heat damage. If using a handheld steamer, hold it slightly away from the fabric to avoid excess moisture.
Storing
Store cashmere in a cool, dry place, preferably folded in a drawer or on a shelf to help it keep its shape. Hanging can cause stretching over time. Cedarwood balls or sachets act as natural moth repellents and should be replaced yearly. For long-term storage, use a breathable garment bag.
Pilling
Pilling is a natural occurrence with cashmere due to friction from wear. To remove pills, lay the garment flat and gently brush the surface with a cashmere comb to restore its smooth texture. With the right care, cashmere remains soft, luxurious, and wearable for years to come.
